Walking Against Blight

Walking Against Blight, sponsored by Warren/Conner Development Coalition and the Detroit Food & Fitness Collaborative, empowers residents to combat blight in their neighborhoods through using mobile mapping technology, engaging in policy advocacy, and organizing to eliminate blight.

In May 2011, 20 residents from 2 eastside pilot areas used mobile technology to walk through their neighborhoods and record instances of blight – vacant buildings, illegal dumping, abandoned vehicles, etc. Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Studies conducted the training and facilitated the data collection.  The data collected provides a baseline for organizing to eliminate blight. The database will be easily accessible online for use by residents, block clubs, or community organizations to organize and prioritize blight elimination efforts as well as track change over time.

Walking Against Blight Update:

The walking club has been moving at full force. The weather has been amazing to us and so has the relationship between walkers. Our next walking club meeting will take place on Friday, October 12, 2012. If you cannot make it please let me know.

Walk Across Michigan:

With our added piece; walk across Michigan campaign, you all have walked 88/350 total miles to date. With six destination cities (Palace of Auburn Hills, Frankenmuth, Saginaw/Bay City, Grayling, Traverse City & Mackinaw Island), you all have already visited the Palace of Auburn Hills and will be in Frankenmuth by Friday. Mackinaw Island is the final destination and you all will be there in no time.

Milestone update:

With your amazing efforts, you all have walked a total of 88 miles. With that accomplishment comes a celebration. Friday, October 12, 2012 we will have our Palace of Auburn Hills theme celebration and also our Frankenmuth Celebration. MSU Extension office will also be here offering our first cooking demonstration.

Walking Against Blight Mobile Mapping Project:

As you all know, the Mobile Mapping project will begin next week. The mobile mapping project will consist of 4 teams. Many of you have already signed up for positions for the mobile mapping project and I just want to say thank you for that. With the mobile mapping project, we will begin mapping blighted areas that have been identified as pilot areas already. We analyze the data to create action items to address what has been identified as blight.

For more information on this project contact: Darnell Adams at dadams@warrenconner.org or call (313) 571-2800 ext. 3202.
